What is a material handling system?

A material handling system moves product through a plant using conveyors, platforms, transfer equipment, and the structure that supports them. Carbotech Manufacturing designs, fabricates, and installs these systems from its Roebuck, South Carolina shop. One team carries the work from first concept through installed equipment.

Plants rarely need a catalog conveyor. They need equipment that fits a specific footprint, handles a specific product, and ties into machinery already on the floor. Carbotech Manufacturing builds to that requirement. Mechanical and electrical engineers work on the same floor as the fabricators, so a plant manager can arrive with a throughput problem instead of a finished print. Cutting, welding, machining, assembly, and paint all happen in one building before the system ships.

What every Carbotech build includes

  • Mechanical and electrical engineering from concept through final drawings
  • Laser-cut components up to one inch thick on a five-foot by ten-foot bed
  • Fabrication in aluminium, stainless steel, or mild steel
  • Structural supports, framing, and platform steel built to the same specification
  • Mechanical assembly and fit-up before the system leaves the shop
  • In-house painting and finish
  • Turnkey project management across the full scope of work
  • On-site installation, with a 12-month warranty on machines we build

How Carbotech builds material handling systems

Most plants have lived through one equipment project that arrived late, arrived wrong, or arrived in pieces nobody could install. We keep the scope in one shop to remove those handoffs.

01

Application review

We start with the product, the rate, the footprint, and the equipment the system has to tie into.

02

Engineering and drawings

Our engineers develop the design and produce drawings for your approval. Problems surface on paper rather than on the floor.

03

Fabrication

Laser cutting, sawing, plasma cutting, machining, and welding all run in the same building, so schedules never wait on an outside vendor.

04

Assembly and finish

We assemble and fit the system in the shop, then paint it before shipment.

05

Installation

Our team installs on site and hands over equipment covered by a 12-month warranty.

Why do conveyor systems fail early?

Most early failures trace to undersized structure, not the drive. Frames deflect under load, fasteners loosen from vibration, and guarding gets removed because it blocks access. Systems built around a real duty cycle and the actual product weight hold up. Systems adapted from a generic drawing rarely do.

Reference — OSHA walking-working surfaces

Handling equipment is a safety structure, not just a conveyor

Every platform, walkway, and support in a handling system falls under workplace safety rules. OSHA requires that any worker on a walking or working surface with an unprotected edge four feet or more above a lower level be protected from falling. Guarding, access, and fall protection belong in the design, not in a change order after installation.

That is one reason we keep engineering in house. A drawing produced by the same company that welds the steel accounts for how a maintenance tech will reach a jam at two in the morning.

Who builds custom material handling systems in South Carolina?

Carbotech Manufacturing builds them from a 14,000-square-foot plant at 129 Old Airport Road in Roebuck, inside Spartanburg County. The shop is backed by a Canadian parent company that has built log handling and wood processing equipment for sawing and planing mills since 1987.

Frequently asked questions

Both. Mechanical and electrical engineers work at the Roebuck plant, so you can arrive with prints or with a problem. Customers who bring drawings get a quote against them. Customers who bring an application get a design first, then a build.

Aluminium, stainless steel, and mild steel. Material choice usually comes down to the product being moved, the washdown requirements, and the environment the equipment lives in. Plate, sheet, and structural sections all run through the same shop. We work that out during application review rather than defaulting to one material on every job.

Yes. Turnkey project management covers the jobs that need one team from drawing through installed equipment. Our crew handles engineering, fabrication, assembly, finish, and on-site installation. Machines we build carry a 12-month warranty, and we stand behind the fabrication work itself. Standard payment terms are Net 30.

The Mazak 510 laser cuts up to one inch thick on a bed measuring five feet by ten feet. Heavier and structural work runs through a Hyd-Mech saw, a Hypertherm plasma cutter, and a Piranha 60-ton ironworker in the same building.

Yes. The parent company has specialised in equipment for sawing and planing mills since 1987, and that experience sits behind the Roebuck operation. Log handling and wood processing work remains a core strength. The shop also builds handling equipment for general industrial and manufacturing plants across other sectors.
